Dad at 32
A chapter from 1994
Two suitcases. A new beginning.
“I told everyone I was excited. On the first night, I sat on my suitcase and wondered if I'd made a mistake.”
The room had a bed, a kettle and a window that wouldn't quite close. I had practised what I would say on my first day at work, but not what I would do with the quiet afterwards. I rang home and said everything was good. Then I made the tea my mother always made, too sweet and with too much ginger. That tiny familiar thing helped. The next morning I asked a colleague where to buy groceries. He walked me there. Starting again became easier when I stopped trying to do all of it by myself.

Dad, when you moved away, what did you find difficult that you never told us about?
